Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who stepped down from office in February 2025, has raised serious concerns over the growing menace of drug smuggling networks in the Northeast, calling it a “grave threat to the future of the country.”
In a strongly worded post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Singh lauded the Assam Rifles and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for their recent joint operation in Mizoram, which resulted in the seizure of narcotics worth ₹36.79 crore.
“I sincerely appreciate the Assam Rifles and the NCB for their coordinated operation in Mizoram, which led to the seizure of drugs worth ₹36.79 crore. Such decisive action deserves recognition and continued support,” Singh stated.
🔍 Call for Stronger Anti-Drug Action in Manipur
Singh emphasized the need to intensify anti-narcotics operations, particularly in Manipur, where he spearheaded the “War on Drugs” initiative during his tenure. He warned that the Northeast region is being exploited as a key corridor for narco-trafficking, which he described as a direct threat to national security and youth.
“This massive drug smuggling network operating through the Northeast is a grave threat to the future of our country,” Singh said, reiterating his earlier stand on eliminating poppy cultivation and cracking down on traffickers.

The former CM stressed the urgent need to destroy poppy fields, calling them the “backbone of this dangerous trade.”
“Only a united, relentless campaign can protect our region and our youth from the devastating grip of narco-terrorism,” Singh added, urging the central and state authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance approach.
