On the occasion of Patriots’ Day, the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, led solemn tributes to two of Manipur’s greatest freedom fighters — Yubaraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh and Thangal General — whose courage and sacrifice during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 remain etched in history.
Tribute at Heecham Yaicham Pat
The Governor began the day’s observance at Heecham Yaicham Pat, Moirangkhom, the site where Yubaraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh was cremated following his execution by the British on 13 August 1891. Accompanied by senior state officials, community leaders, and citizens, he laid floral wreaths at the memorial, calling the prince’s sacrifice “a beacon of courage that continues to inspire generations.”
Visit to the Temple of Thangal General
Later, Shri Bhalla proceeded to the Temple of Thangal General, another towering figure of the Anglo-Manipur War. Paying floral tributes, he spoke about Thangal General’s military brilliance and his unwavering stand for Manipur’s sovereignty. He urged the youth of Manipur to “embrace the values of courage, unity, and selflessness that these patriots embodied.”

Patriots’ Day commemorates the execution of Tikendrajit Singh and Thangal General on 13 August 1891, after the British victory in the Anglo-Manipur War. The day has since become a moment of reflection on the state’s enduring struggle to safeguard its identity and dignity.
