Ukhrul School Incident: 30 Students Rushed to Hospital Following Suspected Food Poisoning

In a disturbing turn of events, around 30 students from KTL Excel Higher Secondary School in Ukhrul were admitted to the Ukhrul District Hospital late on Wednesday evening after reportedly consuming a locally prepared food item known as “Mauli.”

According to hospital sources, several students began complaining of nausea, stomach pain, and dizziness shortly after consuming the food during school hours. Teachers and staff immediately arranged for transportation to the district hospital, where the students received prompt medical attention.

Condition of Students Stable, Say Hospital Officials

A medical team led by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Ukhrul, responded swiftly to manage the situation. Doctors confirmed that most of the students were in stable condition, though a few were kept under observation overnight as a precautionary measure.

“Initial symptoms suggest a case of food poisoning, but samples of the food and patient blood samples have been collected for testing,” said a hospital official. “All students are being closely monitored, and none are in critical condition.”

Parents and guardians gathered at the hospital through the night, while local residents extended assistance by providing food, blankets, and logistical support.

Authorities Launch Investigation

Following the incident, district health authorities and food safety officers have launched an inquiry to identify the exact cause of contamination. Samples of Mauli have been sent for laboratory testing to determine whether the reaction was caused by spoiled ingredients, improper storage, or chemical contamination.

Ukhrul Police have also been informed, and statements from school staff and food vendors are being recorded to establish the sequence of events.

Officials said that while Mauli — a local delicacy made from fermented rice and ingredients like jaggery and nuts — is widely consumed, improper preparation or unhygienic handling can lead to bacterial or fungal growth, especially in warm conditions.

Community Reaction and Official Response

News of the incident quickly spread across Ukhrul town, prompting concern among parents and community leaders. Civil society groups urged schools and local eateries to follow strict food safety standards, especially when preparing food for students.

The Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul has instructed all schools to review their canteen hygiene practices and ensure that food vendors supplying to educational institutions are properly licensed and inspected.

“Student safety is our top priority. We are taking this incident seriously and will ensure corrective measures are put in place to prevent any recurrence,” said an official statement from the district administration.

Medical Advisory Issued

In the aftermath, the District Health Office has issued a public advisory, urging schools, parents, and local food producers to:

Ensure food is cooked and stored hygienically.

Avoid serving fermented or perishable items left at room temperature for long periods.

Report immediately to nearby health centres in case of nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain after food consumption.

The situation remains under control, and authorities have assured that the cause will be made public once laboratory results are available.
