Dhanamanjuri University Inaugurates Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Lecture Series, Emphasising Research and Interdisciplinary Dialogue
Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) on February 9 inaugurated the First Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Lecture Series at the PG-Science Block, marking the beginning of a flagship academic initiative aimed at deepening intellectual engagement, strengthening research culture, and promoting interdisciplinary dialogue within the university.
The launch event brought together faculty members, research scholars, students, and invited guests, signalling the university’s intent to institutionalise sustained academic conversations beyond routine classroom teaching.
Building a Culture of Continuous Academic Exchange
The programme opened with a welcome address by R. K. London Singh, Head of the PG Department of Chemistry and Director, IQAC, DMU. Emphasising the importance of structured academic platforms, he noted that lecture series of this nature play a crucial role in nurturing scholarly excellence, innovation, and curiosity-driven research.
He welcomed the Vice-Chancellor, the distinguished speaker, and participants, describing the lecture series as an opportunity for meaningful interaction between students and leading researchers.
Vice-Chancellor Outlines Vision for University Growth
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor of DMU underlined the need to organise such lecture series on a regular and sustained basis, calling it a vibrant intellectual forum capable of exposing the university community to contemporary research and global academic trends.
He outlined three key pillars central to the university’s long-term development:

According to him, initiatives like the Academic Lecture Series would help bridge the gap between teaching and cutting-edge research, while also encouraging collaboration across disciplines.
Inaugural Lecture on the ‘New RNA World’
The inaugural lecture was delivered by Rakesh S. Laishram, FNASc, Scientist F, and an internationally recognised researcher in RNA biology. He was introduced by Maibam Birla Singh, Convener of the programme, who highlighted Dr. Laishram’s academic journey and contributions to molecular biology.
Speaking on the topic “The New RNA World (RNA-omics): Non-coding and Untranslated RNAs in Gene Expression,” Dr. Laishram provided an accessible yet rigorous overview of how advances in RNA-omics are reshaping modern biology.
He explained the critical roles played by non-coding and untranslated RNAs in regulating gene expression, noting that these elements—once considered biologically insignificant—are now central to understanding complex molecular mechanisms behind various diseases.
Emerging Applications in Medicine
Dr. Laishram also discussed the growing applications of RNA research in cardiovascular diseases, particularly in areas such as diagnostics, targeted therapies, and precision medicine. He highlighted how RNA-based technologies are opening new possibilities for early detection and personalised treatment strategies.
A recipient of several prestigious honours, including the Swarnajayanti Fellowship, Wellcome Trust–DBT India Alliance Intermediate Fellowship, and Ramalingaswami Fellowship, Dr. Laishram was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences in 2023.
Interactive Engagement and Way Forward
The lecture was followed by an interactive session, with students and researchers engaging actively with the speaker. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by R. K. Chingkhei, Assistant Professor and Co-convener, Department of Environmental Science.
Around 100 participants attended the event.
