Over 4,100 Firearms Voluntarily Surrendered in Manipur to Restore Peace

A Groundbreaking Initiative to Re-establish Law and Order

In an ongoing effort to promote peace and public safety, more than 4,100 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered by the public in Manipur. This initiative was launched on May 31, 2023, following an appeal from former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, urging citizens to return illegally held weapons and support law enforcement in maintaining order.

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s Appeal

N. Biren Singh’s appeal called for citizens to surrender any unauthorized firearms, warning that strict legal action would be taken against those who failed to comply. He also emphasized the need to remove road blockades to ensure the smooth flow of essential goods throughout the region. By the time of his resignation on February 9, 2025, a total of 3,422 firearms had been surrendered.

Continued Efforts Under Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla

Following Singh’s resignation, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla took charge and reiterated the appeal for firearms surrender on February 20, 2025. This renewed call resulted in the return of an additional 700 firearms under what was called Governor Appeal 1.0. Arambai Tenggol, a key contributor, handed over 246 weapons.

Looking Ahead: Governor Appeal 2.0

Out of the 6,020 firearms looted during the recent crisis, authorities continue to encourage the public to surrender more weapons under Governor Appeal 2.0. The deadline for voluntary surrender has been extended until March 6, 2025. The authorities now await further updates on how many more weapons will be returned in the coming days.
