The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has strongly condemned what it calls a blatant act of cultural misrepresentation by a self-proclaimed designer, Priyanka Anna Joseph.
According to DESAM, the designer publicly showcased and interpreted the traditional Phanek Mayeknaiba on social media in a manner that disregarded its deep cultural significance. The students’ body described the act as a direct threat to the cultural rights and traditions of the Meitei community, calling it a form of disrespect that undermines heritage preservation.
Phanek Mayeknaiba — a traditional Meitei wraparound skirt with distinct symbolic patterns — holds both social and cultural value, often worn in significant community events and ceremonies. DESAM emphasised that any modification or reinterpretation should be done with cultural sensitivity, ensuring that its traditional meaning is preserved.
The organisation warned that such careless portrayals risk distorting Meitei identity and eroding respect for indigenous practices. DESAM urged designers, influencers, and the wider public to seek proper consultation with community representatives before adapting traditional attire for public display or fashion purposes.
“This is not just about clothing — it’s about protecting the dignity and rights of a community,” DESAM stated.
