The Governor of Manipur, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, has written to Shri Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, urging the Central Government to take immediate measures to restore and enhance flight connectivity from Imphal International Airport.
In his letter, the Governor highlighted that the drastic reduction in flights — particularly on routes connecting Imphal to Guwahati and Kolkata — has caused serious inconvenience and hardship to the people of the State. He described the issue as one of urgent public importance, stressing that reliable air connectivity serves as Manipur’s lifeline in the absence of rail links and limited road connectivity through the National Highways.
Air Connectivity Concerns Mounting
In recent weeks, travellers in Manipur have reported frequent cancellations, reduced flight frequencies, and inflated ticket prices due to limited operational schedules. The drop in flights has not only disrupted passenger travel but has also impacted essential logistics, including the movement of goods, medical supplies, and students commuting for studies.
Sources at Raj Bhavan confirmed that the Governor has called for the restoration of regular flight services to Guwahati, Kolkata, and other major transit hubs, alongside exploring options to introduce new routes under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.
“For Manipur, air connectivity is not a convenience — it’s a necessity. With limited surface transport options, the people rely on air travel for education, healthcare, trade, and administration,” the letter reportedly noted.
Raj Bhavan Following Up for Early Resolution
Raj Bhavan officials stated that the Governor is personally monitoring the matter and has directed close coordination with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to ensure timely and effective intervention.
The Governor also emphasized that stable and affordable connectivity is vital to the State’s economic recovery, tourism potential, and administrative functioning, especially in the current context of restricted land routes and developmental transitions.
“Enhanced air links will reconnect Manipur to the rest of India and reaffirm the Centre’s commitment to equitable development in the Northeast,” the Governor added in his note.
Next Steps
The Ministry of Civil Aviation is expected to review flight operations to Imphal in consultation with major airlines, considering both public demand and logistical feasibility. Discussions may also include temporary route adjustments, subsidies under the Regional Connectivity (UDAN) scheme, and coordination with the North Eastern Council (NEC) for long-term air infrastructure planning.
Meanwhile, Raj Bhavan officials confirmed that they will continue to engage with the Ministry until a satisfactory restoration of air services is achieved.
