Security forces arrested two passengers at Imphal Airport after contraband ganja (cannabis) weighing approximately 21.420 kilograms was detected inside their luggage bags.
The arrested individuals have been identified as:
Laishram Vikash Singh (20), resident of Nagamapal Lamabam Leikai, Imphal West district
Ngangbam Nelson Meitei (19), resident of Takyel Kolom Leikai Takyel Mapal, Imphal West district
Contraband Detection
During routine luggage checks, security personnel noticed suspicious items concealed in the bags of the two passengers. A detailed search revealed multiple packets of ganja, collectively weighing over 21 kg.
Officials confirmed that the seized contraband has been taken into custody for further verification, and both passengers were immediately detained.
Legal Action Initiated
The arrested duo is being booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to trace the source and intended destination of the consignment.
Authorities are examining possible connections to larger trafficking networks operating in the region, as airports are often targeted by smugglers attempting to bypass highway checkpoints.
Curbing Drug Trafficking
Drug smuggling remains a serious issue in Manipur, given its proximity to the Golden Triangle and porous international borders. Over the past few years, security agencies have intensified surveillance at airports, railway stations, and highways to counter trafficking.
An official from the security forces stated:
“Strict monitoring and coordination at entry and exit points are crucial to break the supply chain of narcotics. Arrests like these send a strong message to traffickers.”

The seized narcotics will be forwarded to concerned authorities for forensic testing and valuation. Meanwhile, interrogation of the accused is expected to shed light on whether they were couriers or linked to a larger cartel.
