In a coordinated effort to curb the illegal transport of goods, Manipur Police, in collaboration with the Customs Division, Imphal, intercepted two trucks carrying a massive 8,099 kilograms of betel nuts.
The operation led to the seizure of:
A Tata 12-wheeler truck (WB-26-D-0886)
An Ashok Leyland truck (AS-26-C-9521)
Both vehicles were stopped following credible inputs during a highway inspection drive. Upon thorough examination, officials discovered that the consignments of betel nuts were being transported without valid documentation or proof of origin — a violation of customs and trade regulations.
The drivers and conductors of both vehicles were taken into custody and, along with the seized goods, handed over to the Customs Division, Imphal for further investigation.
Officials have not ruled out the possibility that the seized betel nuts were part of a larger smuggling network operating between border states and neighboring countries, exploiting the state’s transit routes.
Speaking on the operation, a senior police officer emphasized that such coordinated enforcement drives are crucial to curbing illegal trade activities that affect both state revenue and local agricultural markets.
“We remain committed to maintaining vigilance on all key transit points. These seizures are part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with trade laws and to prevent the movement of unaccounted goods,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, customs authorities are expected to initiate proceedings to verify the source and intended destination of the consignment.
The successful interception highlights growing cooperation between law enforcement agencies and customs authorities in tackling illegal trade across Manipur’s sensitive transport corridors.
