At a time when misinformation travels faster than facts, the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Manipur, marked National Press Day 2025 with a renewed call for protecting the credibility of journalism. This year’s observance, held at the DIPR Auditorium, Nityaipat Chuthek, revolved around the theme “Safeguarding Press Credibility Amidst Rising Misinformation.”
The event brought together government officials, senior journalists, editors, and media professionals for an insightful discussion on the changing role of the press, especially in an era shaped heavily by mobile-first consumption, shrinking attention spans, and the rapid rise of AI-generated content.
Press Freedom and Responsibility: Key Messages from Dignitaries
The programme was graced by Shri Hungyo Worshang, IAS, Secretary (IPR), Shri Ngangom Uttam Singh, Director (IPR), and Shri Pradip Phanjoubam, senior journalist and editor of Imphal Review of Arts & Politics.
In his address, Shri Hungyo Worshang described National Press Day as a reminder of the press’s essential role in a democratic society. He cautioned that growing misinformation challenges the very foundations of credible journalism.
He also questioned whether Manipur’s current media environment allows journalists to work freely, pointing to the pressures created by multiple interest groups.
Worshang stressed that despite constraints, journalists must continue to uphold truth and objectivity, especially as audiences increasingly rely on mobile phones and social media for news. In an age when AI tools can both mislead and assist, he said, the press must work harder to distinguish verified information from noise.
Misinformation: A Threat with Real Consequences
Director (IPR) Shri Ngangom Uttam Singh underscored how both information and misinformation today have the power to shape public emotion, escalate tensions, and create instability.
He acknowledged the intense race among media outlets to break news first — a factor that sometimes leads to unverified reports being published prematurely.
Uttam highlighted the fragile line between sensitivity and sensationalism, noting that even small variations in headlines can influence public perception. He emphasised the need for careful verification, balanced reporting, and responsible use of AI tools to counter falsehoods rather than amplify them.
Adapting to Technological Change
Guest of Honour Shri Pradip Phanjoubam reflected on the technological shifts he has witnessed over the decades. He urged journalists to remain adaptable and open to new tools, including AI, which he described as a force that demands both understanding and caution.
Joint Director Shri Tongbram Ramesh Singh and Assistant Publicity Officer Shri N. Roshan Singh expressed gratitude to the media fraternity and highlighted the evolving media landscape in Manipur.
