In a scathing statement, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Shri Keisham Meghachandra Singh has condemned the Union Government’s decision to extend President’s Rule in the state by another six months, calling it a “direct assault on democratic values.”
Reacting strongly to the resolution passed in the Rajya Sabha, Meghachandra said the move signals a dangerous erosion of the people’s mandate and betrays the federal spirit enshrined in the Constitution.
“The extension of President’s Rule in Manipur is not just a constitutional formality — it is a clear undermining of democratic governance and the people’s mandate,” said the MPCC chief.

He further accused the Centre of weaponizing a constitutional safeguard meant for emergencies.
“President’s Rule, meant to be a temporary measure, is now being used as a tool to bypass the will of the people and delay the restoration of an elected government,” he said, arguing that bureaucratic control from Delhi cannot substitute for accountable, local leadership.
🗣 Call for Immediate Political Roadmap
Meghachandra reiterated that Manipur needs an elected, people-backed government, especially in the midst of ongoing instability and unrest. He warned that continuing without a political solution only worsens public trust and weakens governance.
“Democracy must not be sacrificed at the altar of political expediency,” he said, calling on civil society and democratic forces to oppose the prolonged imposition of central rule.

President’s Rule was first imposed in Manipur in February 2024 following the resignation of then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh amid spiraling ethnic violence. With the latest extension, Manipur will remain under central rule until February 2026, unless an elected government is formed earlier.
