The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed World Stroke Day 2025 today with a focused awareness programme held at the New OPD Block at 2:00 PM. The event brought together medical professionals, students, and the public to discuss the growing concern of stroke and the urgent need for preventive healthcare in Manipur.
The session was graced by Prof. Y. Govindaraj Singh, Nodal Officer, Kaya Kalp/SAP; Prof. Th. Suraj Singh, Head of Neurology; and Prof. Th. Gojendro Singh, Head of Neuro Surgery. Each speaker shared valuable insights on the theme of this year’s observance — “Together We Can #EndStroke.”
Prof. Th. Suraj Singh, in his address, highlighted the alarming rise in stroke cases in India and underlined the importance of early recognition of symptoms such as sudden weakness, loss of speech, or facial drooping. “Every minute counts when it comes to stroke. Quick medical response can make the difference between full recovery and lifelong disability,” he said.
Meanwhile, Prof. Y. Govindaraj Singh emphasized that public awareness is key to prevention. He called for community-based education on hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and sedentary lifestyles — the major risk factors contributing to stroke. “We need to bring this conversation to our homes, schools, and workplaces. Prevention begins with awareness,” he added.
Prof. Th. Gojendro Singh spoke on advances in neuro-surgical intervention and rehabilitation, noting that modern treatment options can greatly improve recovery outcomes if patients are brought in time. He urged families not to delay hospital visits when early signs of stroke appear.
The programme also featured interactive discussions between participants and faculty, with practical demonstrations on identifying stroke symptoms and responding to emergencies.
Reaffirming its mission, RIMS stated that it remains committed to promoting neurological health through regular outreach, medical education, and public engagement. The institute continues to lead initiatives on preventable diseases, ensuring that health awareness translates into community resilience.
