New Drug Trade Route Uncovered Post-Manipur Violence: Security Agencies Raise Alarm Over Narco-Terrorism

In a major revelation following the ethnic violence in Manipur, security agencies have uncovered a new and dangerous route being used for drug trafficking, originating from Tonzang in Myanmar and moving through volatile regions of Manipur before reaching other parts of India.

The route, now under scrutiny, is reportedly being exploited by armed insurgent groups and cross-border narco networks, sparking concerns about the rising nexus between militancy and narcotics in Northeast India. Officials have warned that narco-terrorism in Manipur poses a severe threat to national security.

Overview of the New Drug Route

Stage Location Details
1 Tonzang, Myanmar Origin point, controlled by Chin Defense Force–Tonzang (CDF-T), allied with Chin National Army (CNA).
2 Moreh / Shajik Tampak Entry points into India. Avoids traditional Tidim road; uses local paths. Shajik Tampak is UKLF’s base, linked to KNA-B & Thadou Army.
3 Singheu Now the main crossing point across the Imphal River (earlier was Sugnu). Connects Churachandpur and Chandel.
4 Churachandpur Important transit district where the drugs are routed further inland.
5 Kangpokpi Drugs move via German/Tiger Road, allegedly controlled by Kuki National Front (KNF-MC & KNF-P).
6 Dimapur, Nagaland Final transit point before drugs are distributed across India.

Key Groups Implicated

Chin Defense Force – Tonzang (CDF-T) and Chin National Army (CNA) control the Myanmar origin zone.

United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) and Kuki National Army (KNA) influence Moreh and Shajik Tampak.

Kuki National Front (KNF-MC & KNF-P) are allegedly in charge of transit through Kangpokpi.

UKLF’s chief, SS Haokip, is suspected to run operations out of Shajik Tampak.

Security and National Threat Assessment

The uncovered route showcases how insurgent groups are exploiting terrain, ethnic divides, and violence-hit areas to build an underground supply chain for synthetic drugs, heroin, and opiates. The drugs enter India from Myanmar’s unstable Chin region and pass through high-conflict zones, which are difficult to police.

Security experts warn that the entanglement of insurgent politics with drug trafficking could deepen instability in the Northeast and finance prolonged unrest.

Government and Security Response

Central agencies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Assam Rifles, and intelligence wings, have reportedly intensified surveillance along the Indo-Myanmar border and are coordinating with state police to neutralize the drug corridors.

Efforts are also underway to dismantle illegal road networks like the “German Road” (Tiger Road), used for undetected transport of narcotics through remote terrain.

Conclusion

This revelation has once again highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive border management, insurgent disarmament, and development-based peacebuilding in Manipur and other Northeastern states. As narco-terrorism takes root in the region, officials fear the rise of a parallel economy fueled by drugs and guns.
