The State Literacy Mission Authority (SLMA), Manipur, in collaboration with the Department of Adult Education, successfully observed Literacy Week 2025 with a series of events at both the state and district levels. The week-long activities culminated in the celebration of International Literacy Day on September 8 in Imphal.
Painting Competition to Promote Creative Expression
As part of the Literacy Week, a State-Level Painting Competition was organized on September 7, 2025 at the Manipur Art Festival venue, MSFDS Complex, Imphal.
The competition drew enthusiastic participation from young talents across the state, highlighting the importance of literacy and education through art. The winners were selected by two of Manipur’s renowned Kala Academy Awardees — Shri Ksh. Sarat and Shri Ng. Chandrasekhar.
The top participants were honoured with certificates and cash prizes, encouraging them to continue using creativity as a tool for spreading awareness about literacy.
International Literacy Day Celebration
The highlight of the observance was the International Literacy Day Celebration on September 8, 2025, held at the Manipur Press Club, Thangal Bazar, Imphal.
The event brought together government officials, educators, volunteer teachers, and literacy workers who have been playing a vital role in promoting adult education across the state.

Also present were officers and officials from the Department of Adult Education, ZEOs from Imphal East, Imphal West, and Kakching, along with volunteer teachers and literacy workers from Bishnupur, Chandel, Tamenglong, Thoubal, and Senapati districts.

The programme acknowledged the relentless efforts of literacy volunteers and teachers working at the grassroots to ensure that education reaches every corner of the state. Their dedication reflects Manipur’s ongoing commitment to universal literacy, a goal that aligns with both national and global educational missions.

Speaking at the event, the dignitaries emphasised that literacy is not just the ability to read and write, but also a critical tool for empowerment, skill development, and active participation in society. They urged collective efforts from the government, educators, and communities to sustain the momentum towards achieving full literacy in Manipur.

The Literacy Week observance showcased how creative initiatives such as painting competitions, combined with recognition for grassroots educators, can make literacy campaigns more engaging and inclusive.
