A group of motorcyclists from Imphal’s Pangal (Manipuri Muslim) community were reportedly attacked by a mob at Shangkai village around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, according to multiple sources. Shangkai, a small Kuki village near Litan, lies along a busy route often used by travellers heading to and from Ukhrul district.
The group of riders — 34 individuals on 17 motorcycles — was returning to Imphal after a visit to Mova Cave, a popular destination located roughly 82 km from the state capital.
What Triggered the Incident?
The exact cause of the confrontation is still unclear.
However, sources claim that a smaller subgroup of nine riders, who had stopped briefly at Shangkai, allegedly made loud noises near the village area. This reportedly led to a confrontation with some villagers, which escalated into a violent attack.
Witness accounts suggest the mob used stones and sticks, resulting in injuries to at least two riders and damaging several motorcycles.
While the details of the initial altercation vary across sources, all accounts indicate that the situation escalated quickly before authorities intervened.
Police Mediation and Resolution at Litan PS
Following the incident, both the riders and village representatives, including the Shangkai village chairman, reportedly reached a compromise at Litan Police Station.
Kuki civil bodies and local leaders were also present during the discussion, according to people familiar with the matter.
Sources said the goal of the compromise was to defuse tension immediately and ensure the safety of all involved, given the sensitivity of ethnic relations in the region.
Injured Riders Escorted by Police and Army Personnel
After mediation, the nine riders who were directly involved in the Shangkai stop were escorted the same night by Litan Police and personnel from the Maha Regiment. They were safely dropped at Yaingangpokpi, a location closer to Imphal and outside the conflict zone.
One of the injured riders, Altaf Hussain from Urup, reportedly sustained a leg fracture and is currently receiving treatment at JNIMS, Imphal, according to a report by Ichel News Network. Another rider also suffered injuries but is reported to be stable.
Damage to Motorcycles Reported
Eyewitness accounts and local reporting indicate that several motorcycles in the convoy suffered damages during the assault. Images and videos circulating locally — though not independently verified — show broken headlights, bent frames, and dents consistent with stone-pelting or stick blows.
Police have not yet issued a detailed statement on property damage, but officials at Litan PS confirmed that documentation of injuries and vehicle damage is underway.
Calm Restored, Authorities Urge Caution
Though the situation has stabilised, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of travellers passing through certain rural stretches during late hours.
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said,
“We request travellers to avoid stopping in unfamiliar or sensitive areas after dark unless absolutely necessary. Immediate reporting to local authorities can prevent escalation.”
Community leaders from both sides have reportedly advised restraint and emphasised the need for avoiding misinformation or communal narratives around the incident.
